[01-1547] I've bought this item but I ignore its use. It's 7 in. long and is hallmarked '800' (European purity degree 800/1000) and a lion? within a trapezium. Thank for you help. IP: Logged |

What is wrong in my requests? This is the third request of help I've posted. For no one of them I've receive ONE reply. Maybe my questions are not interesting or too difficult for a reply? Someone is available to clear up this question?

This is not the answer, just a guess, but it could be an alcohol burner. The lid, attached by the chain, would have been important to extinguish the flames. If I'm right, it might have formed part of a larger object - a kettle, chaffing-dish or a fondue set, or possibly something individual for warming brandy etc. IP: Logged |

Thank you Patrick for your interest on my "guess". Maybe it's an object linked to burning. Another hypothesis is that this item was an inkwell, as I have a small glass ink container which fits perfectly into the hole (but the lid isn't tightly linked to the body, and rests on the body, so that this item wasn't suitable for transport). What do you think about hallmark. I believe that it was made in 20th century but I was unable to identify it. The seller (wasn't an antique dealer) said that its provenance was East Europe, but maybe the lions are two maker's mark and the object is Italian. Thank you again for your help (I was discouraged as only my questions had no reply) IP: Logged |
