I am new to collecting silverware and need some help in identifying a hallmark on some flatware that I recently purchased. It has a half moon followed by a crown then 800HTB. Any information would be greatly appreciated. IP: Logged |

Your pieces are German. The moon and crown 800 mark was introduced in 1886, for a photo of the original law see: Marks on Silver-Gilt Demitasse Cup & Saucer Your flatware is 80% silver, a lower standard than sterling which was, and is, commonly used in Europe. HTB is the maker, but I'm afraid unknown to me. IP: Logged |

Are you sure the mark isn't WTB, with the T slightly higher or lower than the other letters? That would be the mark of Wilhelm Binder of Schwäbisch-Gmünd. They were founded in 1868 and by 1900 were among the largest manufacturers of silver flatware in Germany. I'm pretty sure they're still in business. IP: Logged |

I am pretty sure that Binder no longer exists. While I'm unsure when and how they went out of business, the most credible opinion I have encountered is that they closed down around 1970. IP: Logged |

Thank you very much for the information. I took another look at the hall mark and your interpretation was correct. Thanks again. IP: Logged |
