Hi I just bought 2 ladles and they have marks on them that I can't find anywhere. Can anyone help please? The first has a circle with the initials R & D at each side, at the top there I think a fleur dr lis & at the bottom the I think the number 14 or it could be IS?. After that in a separate stamp are the words RAVINE DENP??? (I can't make out the rest of the letters). The second has what looks like a head inside the first square stamp, then the letters PD??RDOLZ. Any comments or help would be appreciated. IP: Logged |

Hello - You have given some tantalizing clues, but much more info is needed. I suggest you clean out the marks and get some magnification going so that you can really see them well. The questions I have so far are: is the lady's head on the second ladle in an octagonal shield (a rectangle with clipped corners) or in a barrel shaped shield (a rectangle with two rounded sides)? Which direction is her head facing? Are there other marks in the shield (letters or numbers)? Depending on your answers, the second ladle might have a French silver standard Minerva's head mark plus a maker's mark. On the first ladle, could the fleur de lys be a clover? I'm ready to go way, way out on a limb and suggest the first ladle might be by the French maker Ravinet Denfert and that it is silver plated. Pictures would be helpful to see if the style of your finds corresponds to French work. IP: Logged |

Hi Kay Well I actually bought them in France, its where I live so the name is great to hear. On the second I really can't tell if it actually is a head as its very worn & no its just in a square. Thanks, IP: Logged |

You are very welcome. Living in France as you do, there are several ways you could find more about your ladles. As a first suggestion, most auction firms have free verbal appraisals, so an auction firm might be worth checking out if you can bring the objects along. If you purchased from a licensed dealer, they are required by law to give you full information at time of purchase. IP: Logged |
