I have two large very ornate serving utensils with cherubs and lions etc, they are only marked Italy...I don't know how to tell if they are silverplated or sterling silver or who the maker is or age....?

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Sharon

It is hard to tell without actually seeing them in person, but without some kind of markings to indicate they are silver the most likely material they are made of would be either a non-silver nickel based alloy or pewter. These kinds of spoons, which are always marked "Italy", were imported into the U.S. in large numbers after WW II.

By the way, the correct name for the little figures is "putto" which is the singular form or "putti" which is the plural. The word was originally an Italian one (actually it really originally comes from the Latin putto for boy), but over time it has now come to be used in the English language as well. Putti are those chubby little boy-like angel figures (typically having short little wings) that you see infesting so many Rennaisance and Baroque style art paintings, friezes, murals, sculptures, etc. They symbolize love and devotion.
