[01-1582] Hello! Does anyone recognize this maker's mark?
It appears to be a tree (oak?) within a diamond. Given the other three marks, I believe the maker's German. Thanks in advance for your help! The piece is has "1892" engraved in the bowl. I was surprised that the spoon might be German because the artwork on the handle depicts what appears to be a Scottish couple. (The man is holding a bagpipe.) IP: Logged |

Hi JoeB, I suspect that your spoon is a demitasse rather than baby spoon. Rainwater refers to these as Dresden spoons for the lovely porcelain handles made by Meissen and other factories in the area, and in her Spoons Around the World book there is an example very similar to yours. As for the bagpipes, while they're usually associated with Scotland, the pipes have been documented as far back as the 11th century in Spain, and were fairly well-known as "peasant" instruments throughout Europe from the 14th century on. One additional bit, the 800 would refer to the purity of the silver - 800 parts per thousand. By comparison, sterling is 925 parts per thousand. IP: Logged |
