[01-1747] Hiya. We recently acquired a small silver box. We were told the hallmarks were danish, but a danish friend visited a silversmith who disagreed. We'd really like to know where this box came from and how old it is, and we were hoping you could help. Inside the lid are the following marks: They're a bit indistinct, sorry, but I can describe them for you. The leftmost one is a circle containing a symbol like two Cs back to back, or a slightly curvy H lying on it's side, although it's a bit indistinct. The second rectangular mark has "HP&S" inside it. The third four leaf splodgy shape we really aren't sure about - the inside is too worn. Someone said it looked like four ships. We don't know. The fourth one is the letters "TG" or "TC". Not sure which. Sorry it's a little vague, but I hope it will be enough. Thanks. IP: Logged |

I think the marks are Swedish. The back-to-back C's is the mark of the city of Karlskrona, and the TG/TC is probably T6, the date letter/number for 1897. "HP&S" is almost certainly the maker, with whom I am not familiar. Finally, the unidentified mark is probably (and looks in the photograph to be, though perhaps overstamped) the Swedish "cat's paw" mark, which is actually three crowns in a trefoil, signifying a fineness of at least .830 silver (or .760 gold). Thanks - We'll look into it. We wanted to find out the box's history as it is a copy of another silver box passed down the male side of my family for generations since it was given as a gift to one of my ancestors by R.T.C. Scott. For about 200 years the male line has been unbroken and there's been no question about who the box went to, until it got to my level. Here, the line splits in two - and my father will take possesion of it as he is older than my uncle. However, he bought this swedish box as a gift to my young uncle so that he'd have something to give his children too, and we wanted to find out the history of it if possible before we gave it to him. Anyway, you have been generous and helpful. Thankyou very much. IP: Logged |
