I have two vintage western belt buckles. Both are marked PLAMEX STERLING inside an oval, with an eagle's head in the center. To the left of this is stamped GUARANTEED 925. Is this Mexican? Anyone know anythng about this makers? IP: Logged |

A Plamex buckle appeared at a auction about three months ago - in addition to your markings, it also had "MEXICO" IP: Logged |

The name is probably compounded from "plata" (silver in Spanish) and "Mexico." IP: Logged |

The 925 would also point to a Mexican maker as a U.S. maker would more likely have used the word sterling. What kind of buckles are they? Are they ranger sets (buckle, tip plus one or two keepers) or a large plate with design on it? Do they have 14K gold inlays or inset stones such as turquoise? How do you know they are "vintage"? I've always found that western buckles are really hard to assign dates to with any confidence, especially ones made in Mexico, unless there is some really good provinance that goes with them. There is such a huge quantity of material made in the past 30 years that was made to look old compared the small amount of real vintage stuff that it gets pretty confusing. Then there are all those countless brass ones with Wells Fargo and Winchester rifles and such as the designs. Many are hall marked Tiffany on the back as well. Absolutely all of those are modern made to look old, and Tiffany never had anything to do with them. These were made during the 1960s and 1970s and flooded the flea markets back then. IP: Logged |

I came upon this discussion looking for information on a belt buckle my grandmother just gave me. It was her old belt, I believe from the 40s, 4-piece ranger set with "Plamex Sterling" "925" and "Handmade Mexico" markings. My stamp could be an eagle, it is hard to tell. The tip of the set just says "Mexico". I guess I should ask her when and where she got it. IP: Logged |
