I have inherited a pair of candlesticks 4 inches tall with a base measuring 4 inches across. The silver base is covered by two inch leaves, 7 in number, that radiate around the base. This is topped by an egg-shaped and sized brown'gold coloured onyx piece which is topped by the fluted silver candle holder. This may well be European. The hallmark is an octagon containing an eagle in profile with the numbers 8 3 3 These belonged to my grandmother. I am not interested in their monetary value at all. Just curious about their history. As to photos, I do not own a digital camera. I will try to find a friend who can assist me with that. Would appreciate any suggestions as to their origin. Many thanks, Tina IP: Logged |

Most people who might be able to help with an identification would be reluctant to speculate without photographs of both the piece and the mark; if that is not possible, at least a drawing of the marks, since what may look like an eagle might in fact be something else, and the 833 might actually be 835, which is another European standard mark (Coin Silver w/ "13" mark). A photograph of the piece might also provide clues to date and place of origin. Experience has shown that without adequate information no identification given could be considered 100% reliable, and would only be speculation. IP: Logged |

Swarter is absolutely correct; even a likely identification is impossible without a photograph. That being said, the mark you describe - an eagle in profile in an octagon with the number 833 - sounds like the mark used in Oporto, Portugal for large items of .833 silver between 1938 and 1975. In this case, the full body of the eagle should be shown, facing left with the number is under its head. The outline -an octagon- is important since it varied from city to city; Gondomar used an unequal hexagon, for instance, and in Lisbon the outline pretty much conformed to the shape of the eagle. It is precisely because of minute but important variations such as these that a photograph or good illustration is necessary for identification. IP: Logged |

Swarter and Blakstone, many thanks for your advice. The mark you described for Oporto sounds identical but I will try to obtain a photo and then figure out how to post it! Many thanks for your patience. - Tina IP: Logged |
