I have a goblet that seems to me to be silver because it tarnishes like silver (or at least silver plate) and has a gold interior. Now I have found one very small deeply impressed mark on the base of it and it seems to be the number 18 or could be 13 (it is so small its quite hard to be sure. The mark is square. There are no other marks and i don't know if it is silver or what origin it is. Any help would be very welcome IP: Logged |

Probably it is 13, which is a European standard mark for 81.25/100 parts (81.25%) silver. It should be solid silver alloyed to that percentage. IP: Logged |

Most countries had abandoned the löthige system of fineness by the late 19th, so (assuming that that's what the mark is) it probably is at least that old. But a simple "13" really can't be trusted - it should be tested to determine if it is really silver or not, and some 20th century companies made silver in the antique taste and were not above using an old-style "13" mark to enhance the illusion. Photographs of the piece might help narrow the age, but even there a hands-on examination might be necessary to say anything more with so little to go on. IP: Logged |
