Would anyone gild sterling with dutch gold? I have a Victorian box with hallmarked container lids that match identically in color the brass hinges of the box. The date is 1877-78 and the surfaces of the lids are up to 3 inches in diameter. Thanks in advance for the help. IP: Logged |

I'm not familiar with "dutch gold", however, have you considered that the brass fittings of the box may have been (gold) gilded originally? That could explain the similarity. IP: Logged |

I had not considered that when I posted but it makes a lot of sense. I did read about gilded brass hinges after my post. I wonder if that is uncommon. Thanks so much for your input! Dutch gold (schlag) is an alloy of copper and brass. IP: Logged |
