I have a very intricate belt buckle with several hallmarks. I have researched and discovered it was made in the Netherlands in 1902. It has the Perseus (import) mark, the "S" mark that dates it 1902, the Lion and Key Mark; and the one I believe is the silversmith's mark. This is the one I can't decode. It is a W over a CH. Any ideas?? IP: Logged |

I'm pretty sure the mark you're describing is actually W over GH: the mark of the widow Gerrit Hoogendoorn of Schoonhoven. Gerrit worked 1885-1897, and his widow continued his shop 1897-1908. Perseus' helmet should have letter "M" (the code for the Schoonhoven assay office) on it to confirm this. Hope this helps! IP: Logged |

Thanks so much! You are right...there is an "M" in Perseus' helmet. I looked at that mark several times thinking I should be seeing a letter and never saw it until you gave me the letter. Now, it's as plain as the nose on my face. Do you know where I can get some additional information on the silversmith? It's a beautiful and very intricate buckle. IP: Logged |
