My brother was given a large baton (for a band conductor) which is about 40am long. I think it is made of ebony and has a silver handle about 5cm long, ribbed; a band round the middle where it unscrews with what looks like an inscription plate (not inscribed) and a silver tip. I was lent an article about a Sydney band contest in 1880, which was talking about the prizes, the first being "The magnificent gold and ebony baton, together with 15 superb gold medals set with diamonds". The second and third prizes were basically the same, but with silver instead of gold. The article said the manufacturer was Mr. T.F. Winsener (It could be Wimsener, or similar, since there is a blot on his name) 348 George Street Sydney.
An animal with a curved tail over its back (maybe a lion) A shield inside a shield A pound symbol inside a curved square with frilled bottom. I was wondering if this item was one of these prizes? Any information would be appreciated. Thank you IP: Logged |
