[01-2114] I have a small pill box with a mark of a woman's head facing left. It looks like the Austro Hungarian hallmark for 800 silver and A for Vienna, but that mark faces right. Thanks a lot for the help. I have a photo of the mark under: IP: Logged |

First Minerva, now Diana! That's a reference to another thread (q.v. (Small French cup - Part 1)) wherein a peculiar French Minerva mark was revealed as a fake pseudo-mark. I'm pretty sure that's what you have here. Diana did face the other way on gold items, but never in this five-petal outline and never with the crescent in her hair, clearly visible here. Diana was also used in Hungary fron 1937-1965, but again, never in this outline or facing this way on silver items. I didn't trust my first instinct on the other thread, and I should have. Emboldened by that, I'm going to say that this mark just looks dicey to me - ill proportioned and poorly detailed - and the reversal cannot be explained away. I think it's spurious. IP: Logged |
