[01-2388] I got this small salt spoon in Montevideo. I know it is 800 silver, and the style resembles many pieces I saw. I cannot find the other mark, although I feel I have seen it before. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks,

I had held off responding here while awaiting some new purchases of books from Latin America. Unfortunately, although valuable for other purposes, none cast any light on this mark. The problem, so far as I can tell, is a lack of basic research to date for most Latin American silver production. Some Mexican work is now well documented, and Argentina and Peru are getting better. But while there are a few books that include great photos and descriptions of silver pieces from other areas, information on its makers and production is sadly lacking. And even for Mexico, Argentina, and Peru there are vast gaps in the literature -- which of course also means that there are vast opportunities for scholarship. I know that many people would say there's good reason no one has done this work, that the silverwork is uninteresting. Well, the same thing used to be said about Mexican silver, and even earlier about 19th-century American silver, or pattern sterling. A few decades ago, art nouveau and deco sold for a song to the few who cared enough to pay it attention -- tastes change, and develop over time. There's a sort of feedback relationship between collecting interest and published information; adding to one leads to an increase in the other, and then the pattern builds. Some people may collect out-of-the-way pieces like this for financial reasons (we can't all afford to collect Tiffany and Faberge), others for scholarly or personal reasons. But whether you're seeking these works or run across them incidentally to other pursuits, it's good to have information available. IP: Logged |

FWG, Thanks for the informative response. I agree, "uninteresting" hardly describes Latin American silver. The two pieces I picked up are unlike any I have found elsewhere, which is what initially attracted me to them. Ironically, the influx of vast quantities of S. American silver had a profound impact on silver work and the economy in Europe. Tardy has a very interesting table on world silver production, which skyrocketed in the 16th century. Thanks again for your efforts, IP: Logged |
