I have several silver pieces for which I have questions, but I will start with my most curious. To begin, I know VERY little about silver and hallmarks, but I'm getting there. I have two pieces in front of me that were purchased at an auction years ago. They are both engraved with flowers or leaves, triangles and fine lines. The first is a silver (pewter?) port glass and the marks are very small. I can make out what I think is a knight on a horse over 1879 over 84. The second looks very similar to the first and is a very small (2"across and 1-1/4 h.) three footed bowl. It also has the knight on a horse with 84 and something over 1890. I also see a NE3 and the N is backwards. I do not have any pictures and they probably wouldn't show up if I could take photos because they are so small. Does anyone have any information on any of these marks? Who could I contact to have all my silver pieces appraised (I live near Milwaukee)? Any other advice would be so welcomed. IP: Logged |

Both item 1 & 2 sound Russian. Posting a closeup photo of the marks is always helpful. To request information about an professional appraiser in your area, go to here.

The letter that looks like a backwards 'N' is probably the Cyrilic letter that sounds like 'I' in Ivan. The 'E' is pronounced 'ye', the 3 is the 'z' sound. These three letters are most likely the name of the maker: first name, patronymic, family name. IP: Logged |

Thank you Scott and Dale. You have helped me tremendously. Didn't even think the marks could be another language - big duh! IP: Logged |

Although this is an old post, I felt it could benefit from some cross-referencing with other posts which discuss the same maker, ИЕЗ. Please see the threads Russian help and russian/polish vodka cup kakoshnik. In these above threads, the mark is identified as that of Игор Завяновь (Igor Zavyanov), a prolific Kiev (Ukraine) maker.
