This is a very large Dutch silver galleon top spoon. It is 12.5" long and weighs about 8 0zs. Cannons protrude and the rigging has lines through it so it looks like rope. An inscription on the back is dated 1899. Wish I could get more detail but it is large and hard to photograph.

This is interesting. Some more images would go great.

Now that's the kind of serving spoon to use if you want your children to become interested in silver.

vathek, if you still have this piece, any close ups would be really nice.

finally found it. I like the little vignette on the back of the bowl and the snake twined around the handle - here are more pics:

Great job with the images. Thank you. Are there silver marks on it? Or is it just my eyes?

Hi there Bascall, and Vathek,

I have 3 or 4 of these late 19th c.ship spoons (8" long)in a kitchen drawer...none with sails this intricate, and they all have Dutch hallmarks hiding on the handle and on the ship.

The Dutch have been known to "hide" their marks, or at least disperse them, one here, one there, in a manner that makes them difficult to find. Kind of like
"Where's Waldo", but more challenging.

Oh, and very much fun... but even the small ones can hurt if a child throws one and hits you.

Mine have been used as
A. Race cars,
B. Rocket ships,
C. Gliders,
D. Shovels,
E. Charms to ward off evil spirits,
F. To mix evil spirits (the ship end only).

Oh, and these were the adult usages. You should see how my souvenir spoons are used

Oh, and that looks like a quality mark on the keel of the ship in the close up by Vathek.

bascall: it has all the requisite Dutch hallmarks, and as Marc says, scattered around in various places on the spoon including the keel.
