[26-1624] Yesterday I bought this Jardiniere at a second hand market. Recognized the silver factory [HH],this is the mark for the factory called Hooijkaas from Schoonhoven. They started their factory in 1874 and still running business in Holland nowadays. After cleaning I recognized also other marks:
After cleaning it I gave it a special place. So it was a good silver hunting day and it should be nice if other people can/will tell stories about their lucky bought of silver objects at for instance second hand markets, fancy fairs, garage selling etc. Can somebody tell me where these one's where used for and in which period they started to make these objects and in which countries. Is France the first producing countries of these kind of patterns. They also speak of "guirlandes" used for decoration. I saw for instance 18th century salt potteries made of silver and also with blue glass inside. I'm curious. Greetings

You have found what looks to be a very decorative object. The style would be called neo-classical, and became popular in England and France towards the end of the 18thC - say around 1760's. It has been popular on and off ever since, hence the date of yours. Those draped bands of floral decoration would be called "garlands" in England, and if they looked like draped bands of fabric (cloth) would be called "swags". If you want to call it a particular class of object, then calling it a fruit bowl would be about right. But like any object, it would be used for whatever was needed at the time. So flowers would look fine in it too. Your keen eye has been well rewarded. IP: Logged |

Thank you very much Adelapt, Fine reaction from Australia, I have read your information and be helped a lot with it. Since I've bought this one I've checked other looks likes and have found some of it. I'm very happy with it and put it in the window glass showcase with information. It's nice to get information so now I know the purpose/use of the object. Also that other information is interesting to know. About (snip) prices I begin to understand that antique shop holders can buy these jardinieres at auction and try to sell them in their shop with four(snip?)times profit. Of course they run a shop but I don't think they buy one article at auction. It's hard to find a way to explain values, so I will be emotional valued with the jardiniere (symbol learned from you!). Well I pump my rubber boat, try to make the trip to England, phone to Mr. Martin(Flog it) and be in the program in Great Britain. I let you know, Adelapt thanks a lot! IP: Logged |

There is one question about a little mark I couldn't recognize, because it's a continental silver object it isn't easy to recognize for other members outside Europa. But I hope there is somebody who can recognize this mark by finding it in one of the silver books. I hope it is to find because than I've full information about this Jardiniere. Any help is most appreciate! Thanks a lot Silverhunter.

I've tried the silver factory Hooijkaas in Schoonhoven by e-mail for to get information with a better photo of the mark. No reaction at all from their side. I think the firm has no good archive of that period (around 1918), or never had? So it is hard to find out marks sometimes! I'll try to post a new topic about the spoon I received today by mail. Thanks a lot for your reaction again. IP: Logged |
