[26-2044] Hi everyone, My name is Jan Free and I'm living in The Netherlands. I am interested in antique gold and silver. I encountered a very nice and uncommon French gold snuffbox in a collection. I am trying to find out who made this beautiful little box. It was made in Paris after 1838. The town mark is that of Paris. It is a rooster head facing right, (in service Sept 1, 1809, see Tardy, Poicons d'or et de platine, 11th edition, page 143, below, fourth from the right) and counterstruck with bigornes (1838). I do not have any reference on work masters after 1838, so I post some pictures here and hope that someone can help me with the makers-mark. I am a professional valuer/appraiser in jewelry, gold and silverworks. I graduated in 1993. I live in the northern part of the Netherlands. As a hobby I do research on silversmith who worked in the province of Groningen. In my daily work I encounter many interesting pieces of gold and silver like this nice little snuffbox. I do not have the literature on french gold and silversmiths after 1838, so I posted this question. I have an extensive library, but one cannot have all. Enjoy the pics, Jan IP: Logged |

I'm wondering if the rather prominent 18k mark is original? IP: Logged |

Hello Argentum 2(?),there is still someone in the USA with the same forum name? (I wonder?) First of all welcome to the forum, nice snuff box it is by the way.(I'm not special educated concerning knowledge about silver and gold expertise) but it also has my attention as a hobby. There are various internet websites with a lot of information I can mention some, but it is easy to be find. This forum has a lot of specialists about gold and silver items but never give values at pieces. I wonder as a Dutchman where you followed your education as valuer/appraiser because I only good find until now a course concerning antique. I know there are silver- goldsmith education. I think value of gold and silver pieces can find out by auctions, and famous internet websites, antique shops etc. In Holland at the moment there is plenty silver/gold for to buy. Concerning high silver/gold value from this moment. One summer market in Delft for instance gives a indication how much silver/plate/gold is showed. Back to your question I will try to get any information about the gold mark or when I found a book offered at internet I let you know. Good luck wished from a Dutchman out of the west! It looks very big Holland . IP: Logged |

To silverhunter: there is not a course one can follow to become a valuer/appraiser. It is selfstudy. There is only a final examination where you have to prove that you have a high standard of knowledge concerning antique and modern silver, jewelry and gemstones. Usually it takes years of study to reach this level. I am a member of the “Federatie van Makelaars, Taxateurs en veilinghouders in roerende zaken”. On their website you can find all the information. To Scott Martin: This box was purchased at a leading antique fair in Holland by a collector/friend of fine object of art. I promissed him to find out who made this box. There is no commercial interest for me. I read the SSF guidlines and I understand that one cannot post a thread for commercial purposes. I do not have to valuate this box because it was bought recently and the invoice for this box was accepted by the insurance company. Thank you. IP: Logged |

Thanks for the explanation. Please suggest to your "collector/friend of fine object of art" that they join the Forum to discuss this box. It is best for the owner to post. If the owner misuses the info gotten by your posting questions for them, then any Guideline conflicts become yours. IP: Logged |

Welcome to the forum Jan. Your explanation is very much appreciated. Is your friend computer savvy enough to post here? Many older collectors are not able to do so. Can you tell us about other silver you have appraised? IP: Logged |
