[26-1899] Can someone tell me something about a silver bowl with the mark GAB and then under the tent of the A the word "Just", then NS.ALP. (I assume that is nickel silver?) and then Sweden. I assume that this is for Just Anderson, but wasn't he Danish, not Swedish and didn't he work in Pewter and Bronze? Thank you IP: Logged |

Hello and welcome, Could you tell us a little bit about yourself and why you are asking? We are all volunteers here and like to know who we are talking with. Are you a dealer. Also a photo would really help with identification, which usually can not be done from a mark alone. IP: Logged |

I am not a dealer at all. A writer, actually and I love old arts and crafts style silver. I found this piece in a thrift shop and liked the form of it and did some research and found this forum. I can try and post pix, but I must confess I am technically challenged. I know how to attach pix as file, but am not familiar with other forms of posting. IP: Logged |

You are right Just Andersen was danish. And he was a silversmith. But he is best known for Disco Metal a bronze metal that he invented and gave name after Disco bay (Greenland) He also gave design for Michelsen and Herz famous danish silver smiths. And as in your case GAB sweden. alp is alpaca. NS is silver plated as you assume. Base metal alpaca - alpaca is "silver colored" so you will not see the same yellow as when base material is cobber or brass. IP: Logged |

There is no silver in Nickel Silver. It is an alloy of copper and nickel. Sometimes they add more non-precious metals to the alloy such as zinc, tin or others. It has several commercial marketing names such as alpacca (sometimes spelled alpaca), German silver, and others. Nickel silver is sometimes used as the base metal in silver plated objects. When this is done it is called EPNS or electro-plated nickel silver. Photos are are really important since so many markings are similar. In addition to being able to provide accurate information on your things, it is the friendly thing to do since everyone on this forum enjoys seeing new things and learning about them. Posting photos is not difficult if you follow the step by step directions at this link: How to Post Photos. IP: Logged |
