Interesting questions. Kaplak - this is from a dictionary and it reads: I am very interested in the subject. In a Swedish article from the 1950ties I have read about the tradition of ships agent. They gave a gift to the captain when he used the agents services. Then we talk bribe. Not the same as Kaplak. But what is real - bribe or a reward? Or was both the case and 2 different things? Anyone know? I have 3 silver spoons from Königsberg - 1858 and 1859. With inscription Rob. Kleyenstuber Shiffs makler Königsberg These spoons are typically (possible) gifts Königsberg was a shipping company - so the spoons can be both bribe & reward. Anyone with more information? I could open a new tread with pictures - if anyone interested. IP: Logged |

Hello hose_dk, Starting with kaplak who/what is Kaplak? I have also looked for the translation over here, "Bribe" is also called illicit commission. Dutch words for Bribe is : "steekpenning" or "smeergeld". Gifts like goods or money can be used as bribe. Big companies are paying government for get the deal or get their order for production. A golden handshake (never had one) for doing great work. Reward is called "beloning"nearly the same spelled in DK. The personal translation for reward is the honest payment of someone's work in a right proportion what he/she has done. Your three spoons can be given I think more in the meaning of reward. I hope that I've understood your question? Königsberg has changed by time there is a good article what I've read about it. If you want I can look for the site. I have read it after asking a spoon which I have and the information which I got from member Blakstone. After second world war it was called Kaliningrad by the Russians but I think you already know that. Can't you send a photo of the spoons? Greetings IP: Logged |

Thank you for the reply. Very little has been written regarding kaplak - and kaplak is in the good sense. Reward for the captain when the vessel arrived in good condition. Reward for the 1st mate when the cargo was in good condition. At first it was cloth for a hat. Now the other meaning - shipsagent gift. That version is described in the Swedish text I referred to. The spoons I have is from Prussia and Königsberg being the capital in East Prussia. And yes please look for the article. IP: Logged |

I found information about Königsberg (Kaliningrad) at Wikipedia. There is a lot of information to find. Are these spoons the one's you wrote about before? Or is that another item that we can aspect in short time? I am curious about your Kцnigsbergische Lüpfel 3x and again historic information behind it. IP: Logged |
