Sometimes a piece is just sort of irresistable, and this was one of those for me. Have an affection for Scandinavian design, regardless of era, and have wanted a carved wooden mangle board with a horse handle for many years, but haven't found the right one in my price range, so when I ran across this charming silver server (kakespade) by Bergen maker Th. Olsens, had to have it. Personally, have little doubt the design was based on Norwegian mangle boards, and have included comparisons to 18th and 19th century examples. It's not anything I've seen before, and haven't been able to find any others, measures 7-7/16" long, 2-7/16" wide, and 2-1/4" tall, weighing in at a sturdy 78 grams - and I may be biased, but believe he may be the sweetest silver horse ever...

Thanks for sharing this Cheryl. I agree the horse is absolutely charming. The AM mark threw me off when you said the maker was Th. Olsen until I dug deeper to find that Theodore Olsen was bought by brothers Magnus and Knut Aase after Theodor's death. They kept the name of Theodor Olsen and apparently in 2016 Theodor Olsen changed their name to Arven AS. My knowledge of Norwegian silver is spotty so thank you for giving me a reason to educate myself.

Glad you like him too, June! The mark confused me for many years, further complicated by some pieces bearing this mark also stamped 'M.AASE' - finally asked a nice Norwegian gentleman to clarify for me and this is based on his information:

Theodor Olsen died in 1890 and his widow sold the business to Magnus and Knut Aase in 1903/04, from the firm's founding in 1868 until 1903, their marks were initials and/or names (M&T OLSEN, Th.O, Th.Olsen, Theodor Olsen), from 1904 they used Magnus Aase's conjoined AM-over-7-dots (for the 7 hills/mountains of Bergen) mark, Aase had used it in his workshop from its founding in 1899 until 1903, both as retailer and for his shop's production. Magnus Aase's business continued, using the marks 'M.AA.' or 'M.AASE' until closing in the '90s, their equipment was sold to Th. Olsens Eftf. around 1925-30. Over the years, the Olsens mark evolved into a pointier crown-like 'AM' over the 7 dots, to the current pointy crown-like 'AM' without the dots.
