Hello - Am puzzled so am turning to the experts again...I have a sterling/tortoise shell box that is hallmarked "C & A" in an oval - lion - leopard head - date letter...I have been researching and am puzzled since the lion appears to be an assay mark from the 1936-1974 years whereas the date letter "M" definitely is styled as an 1927 London assay mark.... .... has anyone ever come across this where date letter and sterling symbol seem not to coincide and how does one go about making a determination then...the only other mark on the box is "Made in England" indicative of a post-1920 ca.... also if anyone could point me in the direction as to where I could research the maker's mark "C & A" - would be most sincerely grateful. Thank You. rose IP: Logged |

Dear Rose: Regarding your question about English silver date letters not quite jiving: keep in mind that an assay office is regulated by law as to what date letter it can use as a hallmark, and that there can be no variation. Look again at your piece--the earlier (from 1896-1916) lion passant and leopard head has a scallop at the top, and the next version doesn't. The "m" has a slight variation between the 1907 and the 1927 version, the 1927 being more "gothic" style. Sterling and tortoise shell items were very popular in the early 20th century, so it could really be either the 1907 or the 1927 date letter. Good luck, but remember that the assay office is always right! IP: Logged |

Dear Audrey: Thank You!!! so very much for your reply - it has helped clarify my query. Yes the date letter is definitely "gothic" in style and this would coincide with the "Made in England" stamp also. Again thanks for taking your time to answer - it is sincerely appreciated. rose IP: Logged |

This post reminded me of a semi-related question that I have. A while ago, I purchased a silver-gilt and enamel brooch with a buffalo motif. Everything about the brooch suggests 1st quarter 20th century manufacture: the pincatch, the engraving, the enamel, the overall style. However, the English marks on the back are for 1966! I feel pretty sure that the brooch is NOT this recent...can anybody explain the discrepancy?
Thanks. IP: Logged |
