I hope somebody can tell me what the Lion in a shield, facing left means; also, what does the Leopard mean? Thank you, time is of the essence here. Dovin IP: Logged |

Classically, in English silver, the lion Passant denoted the London Assay office and the Leopard head represented the House Royal (ie, the King's mark). This, however, is really meaningless without seeing the full marks and the piece. Both were used by American, Canadian, Asian, and Continental makers at various times and in various combinations and mean nothing more than the desire to indicate (honestly or no) goods comparable to English plate. Why do you need to know in such a hurry? Settling a bet? Finishing a paper? Writing ad copy? IP: Logged |

I am about to enter into a contract to buy. Have been told it is sterling, but that the marks are not very clear. I have been told this: That the maker is George W. Adams of London, England, and that the hallmarks include the artist's initials, Lion of London, the Silver mark leopard, the Queen Victoria effigey and two year marks, 1845/6 & 1846/7 IP: Logged |

Here are the marks (for 1865 in this case) by the maker in question:

Dear Dovin, We appreciate your participation in the Silver Salon Forums. There are several folks who give generously of their time and knowledge for the benefit of silver lovers at large. Mostly, we all participate because we want to share and to learn from each other. Although we have a very knowledgeable group of participants, the information in these forums should not be used as the basis for purchasing or selling merchandise. I feel this disclaimer had to be expressed after I read your "time is of the essence" comment. If you are not sure you are dealing with a reputable dealer or the dealer is not willing to put identification representations in writing to you, these forums cannot provide the assurances you desire. I hope you will continue to post your questions in the forums, but I also hope that you will share some of your finds with us as well. We would especially like to see some photos. IP: Logged |

No problem. Never was a concern of mine. I would never base a substantial purchase on something like this forum, as valuable as it is. My inquiry was simply to verify to myself the marks were as genuine as I thought they were. And they are.... thanks for your efforts and your time. IP: Logged |
