I just purchased 7 English teaspoons in a classic early 19 century style. These are marked with the jubilee mark of 1935-36 and made by the same maker R&B in a shield. The unusual thing is that they are marked from 5 different assay offices Birmingham, Chester, Exeter, Glasgow, and London. Has anyone ever run across similar marked items and does anyone know who R&B is? They are an interesting study in English marks. P.S. each spoon is marked by the same journeyman. IP: Logged |

Again probably too late for the original enquirer? R&B in this instance is ROBERTS & BELK of Sheffield. The sets of spoons, each with a different Assay Mark were first produced (I think) as part of the many 'Jubilee Souvenirs', but became a stalwart for tourists, continuing through to the 1960's. Many are by Roberts & Belk, but other manufacturers made them too - usually plain 'old english' pattern and in a red box with a small descriptive pamphlet inside to describe the marks etc. - The perfect introduction to British hallmarks?? As you probably know by now, you are missing Edinburgh. These spoons came as a set of 6. The pamphlet SilverLyon mentions concludes with the words, "This useful gift is therefore both historic and educational, and must increase in value by reason of its rarity. Teach the children (young and old):-" I'm not sure about the increase in value, but certainly a fun piece and a talking point! Phil IP: Logged |

I suspect since they have the same journeyman's mark that they were made in a single location (Shefield) and then marked with the seperate hallmarks for each of the cities. I thank you both for your time and knowlege. Fred IP: Logged |

Just a thought on the mechanics of getting six spoons hall marked in six assay offices. Obviously sets of spoons would be sent to the individual offices and then packaged on their return to Roberts &Belks, but my question is about R&B's having to register in each office and whether they could get an English made article marked in Scotland. My experience with the London Assay office was that the work submitted had to be made in England, (or is it the Brittish Isles) and that therefor you could make them in Sheffield and send them to any English office, but for Scotland did you have to make those spoons in Scotland (and out of curiosity what about Ireland)?
