[01-1113 08-0056] Hi again, I recently purchased some dressing table sets i.e. brushes and mirrors, made of silver. I was wondering if you could please date the pieces and tell me anything about the makers. They are all Birmingham Assay Office. 1 2 3 Thank you. Please also could you recommend a good hallmark book or website so I can do this simple dating myself? IP: Logged |

You might take a look at According to this, the first is 1925 and the second 1912. But the third? "Old English", but uppercase or lower, a V or a U? IP: Logged |

Hi there, the letter is a fancy capital "U". IP: Logged |

While it is large, it looks to my eye more like a lower case "u" since it seems to have a tail. IP: Logged |

The third mark is 1894-5. Online for British Hallmarks check British Silver Date Letter Marks In my opinion, the best general reference for Britain, Scotland and Ireland would be Jackson's Silver & Gold Marks edited by Ian Pickford. Try to get the latest edition, I believe it was printed in 2000. (It corrects all discovered errors from the previous issue.) It is expensive, but if you're serious about collecting, good references can save you money in long run. If you decide to specialize in silver from a particular area there are more books available, such as just on Birmingham silver (the name escapes me). You can also do a Google search for assay offices if you get stuck on maker's marks such as the ones above and usually they will help you out if you send them a clear picture of the mark. Good luck.
