Hello, I understand that UK silver hallmarks are going to be abolished to conform to European Law. Is this correct? I understand that it is illegal to alter silverware without being re-hallmarked and also that no other metal, such as tinplate, should be added to mar the object. Is my understanding correct? Not abolished, but the rules will be modified. As I understand it they continue to mark British silver more or less the traditional way but - they have to allow foreign 800 silver into their market; so it is to be expected that British makers will also start to produce articles in that quality - the standard is denoted numerically, ie. 800, 925, 958 with the lion/britannia symbol an optional addition to the numeric I believe the other marks remain pretty well as they were: IP: Logged |
