This is the last post from me for now!

I have a beautifully preserved pair of Georgian sugar tongs. It is an E in the letter date cartouche. There are no other marks that I can find on them but am I correct in saying 1800/01 for the date? They are 5 3/4" long and virtually unworn. I suppose the style was common to the period, so finding a maker is all but impossible. Any thoughts on this please?

My thanks, once more
Sue

Hi there,

The date letter "E" for London matches yours, dating it to 1800.

You are correct, the tongs have fairly standard standard form and decoration for the period. Nearly every piece of English silver will have a maker's mark, but for some reason quite a few tongs don't. Tongs had to be marked before the final bending into shape, so I imagine that quite a few tongs were accidentally bent before the marks had been applied, and the omission could not be corrected.

Many thanks to Ross and Brent. I love the explanation for the lack of maker's mark. I am always astounded how little these items sell for. Such a wonderful sense of history to them for me and I am getting very fussy about my small collection - grin. There seems to be little respect for 200 year old pieces, if they are lowly sugar tongs.
