This is the last post from me for now! I have a beautifully preserved pair of Georgian sugar tongs. It is an E in the letter date cartouche. There are no other marks that I can find on them but am I correct in saying 1800/01 for the date? They are 5 3/4" long and virtually unworn. I suppose the style was common to the period, so finding a maker is all but impossible. Any thoughts on this please?
My thanks, once more IP: Logged |

Hi there, The date letter "E" for London matches yours, dating it to 1800. IP: Logged |

You are correct, the tongs have fairly standard standard form and decoration for the period. Nearly every piece of English silver will have a maker's mark, but for some reason quite a few tongs don't. Tongs had to be marked before the final bending into shape, so I imagine that quite a few tongs were accidentally bent before the marks had been applied, and the omission could not be corrected. Many thanks to Ross and Brent. I love the explanation for the lack of maker's mark. I am always astounded how little these items sell for. Such a wonderful sense of history to them for me and I am getting very fussy about my small collection - grin. There seems to be little respect for 200 year old pieces, if they are lowly sugar tongs.
