Hey, Suzanne, now that you have The Big Book all warmed up, can you help me with this one? All seems straight forward (Edinburgh, 1816), except the maker's mark:

I can't find any Edinburgh "AC" maker mark near this date, the closest being an "A. Coghill" in the Wyler 1848-1903 auxiliary listing. However, the mark may be something else, or maybe an overstrike? I would imagine that The Big Book at least comes with a pair of folding cardboard frame X-ray vision glasses that clearly define hallmarks! Don't know whether they'll work on a computer screen, though. wink

Hi Rick, It does all look straightforward for Edinburg 1816-17 The maker's mark is a toughie! I think it's AC struck over something... "W"?
The Big Book just has Alexander Cunningham, 1799, and the Mrs. 1812 , Dumphries Scotland also Alexander Cameron 1818, Dundee - Scotland. I have a few more books so I'll see if I find anymore tonight... If I can figure out where I put those darned x-ray vision glasses, then we'd be in business... smile

Suzanne - thanks for the look-see. The more I look at it, the more the "A" looks like an overstrike, maybe over a "V" (a "W" would be too long). Note the different angle to the top edge of the stamp over the "A" as compared to over the "C". But I don't see a "VC" listed either (though the understrike mark second letter may not be a "C"). Appreciate your looking, but don't put in a lot of time. Between the two marks, it may be a game of musical letters. smile

I see what you mean by the different angle. This one might be impossible, but I'll look for a site for the Edinburgh assay office and if I find one I'll send them the question.

Hey Rick, I found an Edinburgh assay office site! Email me the photos. I doubt they'll bother if I just sent them the Forum link.

Suzanne, maybe your email address is listed in a member profile, but I can't seem to be able to find such for this message board. Please email me at rick@slocoast.net. I find it surprisingly accommodative if the assay office would respond to an individual inquiry of this type. Not all all in keeping with stiff upper lip Brit bureaucratic efficiency. wink

Okay, cancel the above, I found the profile icon. Pic to arrive shortly, when I get back on my own machine. Paris, huh? Wow! Left Bank or Right?

Rick

P.S. - If you prefer, you can just right click on the pic on this page, and save it as a jpeg file and then attach it to an email.

Hey Rich, I just sent the mark off to Edinburgh. Let's see if we get a good reply. This is the first time I've tried to contact them directly. Fun, Huh!

Paris is a blast! We live just a block from the Arc de Triomphe... Right Bank. I'm not allowed to work while I'm here so I'm using the time to try to learn a bit more about my passion - silver collecting. smile
