You have a nicely engraved Victorian-era spoon. It is Sterling silver from Scotland, assayed in Edinburgh in 1869-1870. The maker/retailer is C() & McDonald, the McDonald likely being William J. Mcdonald, a recorded silversmith of Edinburgh from this time period. Your mark itself is not recorded in Jackson, so I do not know who the C might be. Here's how to read the marks on your spoon: 1. The maker's mark, usually on record at the assay office. 2.) The monarch's head, in this case Queen Victoria. This indicates that the proper duty on this article of silver has been paid. 3.) The thistle, which is basically the mark of the assay master. 4.) The castle, which is the town mark for Edinburgh. 5.) The date letter. The capital N in an oval is the date letter for 1869-1870.\ Hope this helps. Scottish sterling silver does not have the lion passant mark found on most English silver. IP: Logged |
