Here is another spoon obtained in France. This one appears to be silver, but the marks are hard to read because of the grooves in the pattern. The first mark is a leopards head, the second is the date letter O (turned sideways), the third is the lion passant, then an unknown and the last is the letter H. I believe it is from London, 1849, but would like confirmation. Thanks again - I love this forum!!!

I think you are mainly correct. The first mark is actually the sovereign head duty mark, in this case Queen Victoria, and the fourth mark is the uncrowned leopard's head, struck sideways in the fashion of the time. You got the date quite right. The H appears to be the back half of the maker's mark, with the front intial being mainly rubbed out. Brent IP: Logged |
