Hello - I have some pieces that have hallmarks attributed to Birmingham with a 1910 circa but do not know maker...the mark very tiny of course appears to be the letters "R M" (on top) and (underneath) "E H" - these letters are placed on and upward angle which give the appearance of an overall diamond shape ... any thoughts or input on who the maker might be would be most gratefully appreciated. And my sincerest "thanks" for your previous help. Thank You. rose IP: Logged |

A little late, and you probably already know the answers, but just in case: Your maker's mark is that of MARTIN, HALL & Co. (Richard Martin and Ebenezer Hall) of Sheffield. One of the largest manufacturers of both sterling and silverplated wares in the last half of the c.19th. It is NOT surprising to find their maker's mark alongside Birmingham marks - they also registered marks at Chester and London as well as in Sheffield. Their motives for Birmingham and Chester, I suggest, were simply practical - to get the maximum number of pieces hallmarked in the minimum amount of time when the Sheffield assay office was busy. With London, there was perception (especially in the Colonies) that 'London made' goods were of better quality than those made elsewhere, so there was an 'added value' to pieces hallmarked in London (even if made in a huge factory in Sheffield). The story of Martin, Hall & Co. is worth telling - especially that of Ebenezer Hall -IF anybody is interested I will try and post an abridged (and not too dull) version on the 'stories' forum. Silver Lyon - I personally would be delighted to hear the story of Walker & Hall. Waylander IP: Logged |
