I believe the Tudor rose (Sheffield Assay Office) was introduced in January 1975 to replace the earlier Crown. I'm not certain, but I believe date letters are no longer compulsory, and the .925 mark may relate to new European regulations. IP: Logged |

Thanks for info re Sheffield rose. Do you suggest that they made their own date letter, not following assay office form? IP: Logged |

The references I have only show one range with the rose: 1975 to 1999, it's capital letters. So could it be a=2000, b=2001 ?? You will need to be guided by where you got it. I believe Patrick to be correct that the date letter is no longer mandatory - does that mean you can put anything you want on it? I doubt it. IP: Logged |

With the changes to the British hallmarking laws, which applied from 1999, only three marks were mandatory. They were the sponsor's mark (we knew it as the maker's mark), the assay office mark (in this case the Sheffield rose), and the finenessmark (the numerical one). The date letter was optional, struck on request. Your date letter would be, as posited by Arg(um)entum, from the cycle beginning in 2000, thus, it was for 2001. It's a nice new corkscrew.
