I have English silver sugar tongs (1821) with a partial break through the back (connection between the two arms). A silver repair service has offered to silver solder the break, but they have said this would anneal the spot and therefore the springiness of the tongs would be lost. Is there a way to repair the tongs while retaining their function? Or is their a way to harden them again after repair? Thank you. IP: Logged |

Barry, I may be able to help you. The silversmith you consulted was correct, though, I would like to see the piece before making a final judgement regarding the hardness issue. If there is no ornament around the split, delicate hammering with a rawhide or plastic hammer may stiffen the area enough to make it springy once again. Visit my Web site at www.silversmithing.com/silver for information on my business. IP: Logged |
