I am trying to determine if a piece is sterling or not. The marks are not legible. I have been told by the seller this: that it was made by George W. Adams of London, England, and that the hallmarks include the artist's initials, Lion of London, the Silver mark leopard, the Queen Victoria effigey and two year marks, 1845/6 & 1846/7. What does the Leopard mean? Is it sterling? Thanks IP: Logged |

The marks for a London made sterling piece c 1846-1847 would be: Lion Passant, Leopard's head, Victoria's bust, and the date letter K (1845-1846) or L (1846-1847) in a black letter typeface, not necessarily in that order. George Adams was entered in Goldsmith's Hall in 1840 and his mark was two conjoined circles containing G and A. IP: Logged |
