I used to have a contact called Freddie Cohen who was an expert on Channel Islands silver who was resident in Jersey. I emailed him recently on fecohen@itl.net but found it no longer valid. Can anyone adise me of his current Email or other address please. Failing that, does anyone know of another wise source of wisdom on Channel Islands makers marks ? I have one on a a buckle of around 1740 -50 by London style and cannot find in Mayne . Thanks IP: Logged |

If you or someone you know can take a picture of the piece and the mark and forward it to us, we will see that it is posted. Even a drawing of the mark might be useful. Without a picture, it is difficult to make an identification, should it actually be from elsewhere. How is it that you are able to be certain it is of Channel Islands origin? IP: Logged |

The Channel Islands Silver book by Richard Mayne shows a JA (IA) mark on page 23 under Jersey silversmiths and another JA (IA) mark on page 105 for Guernsey. Both were listed as unknown silversmiths when the book was published in 1985. The unknown Jersey silversmith is listed as circa 1685-1744 while the Guernsey smith is listed as c. 1763-1807. There may be a later edition of this book or you may find out more information by writing the author or publisher. The publisher is listed as Phillimore & Co. LTD, Shopwyke Hall, Chichester, Sussex and the author’s address in the book is Perriwood, Mont à l’Abbé, Jersey, C.I. IP: Logged |

Clive Taylor has forwarded the following images (the mark is his drawing, as the original did not photograph well):
