The picture is of a tea caddy spoon with the makers mark B.C. With the Hibernia, harp and date letter c, it appears to come from Dublin, Ireland, c1799. I brought the spoon because of the interesting design at the top of the handle. It is very contemporary in feeling to me and I think that is what I found engaging. I really do not have many Irish pieces, but after a knowledgeable member tentatively identifying the pierced tongs that I discussed under coin silver, as coming from Samuel Walsh, I think I need to look more closely in this area. Any information about the maker would be appreciated. In this instance the design on the top of the handle is really very simple, but nevertheless provides a real depth or strength to the design. Are you sure of the date? I can not make out the marks from your image and the handle design (if original) would be staggeringly innovative for 1799. IP: Logged |

The marks are as pictured on page 744 of Jackson's Silver and Gold Marks - Hibernia, the harp crowned and the date letter C. According to Jackson, after 1807 there would be more marks. I will try to get a better picture of the marks. Art IP: Logged |

Actually, the hallmark for 1944 is the same as yours, only in a cut-corner cartouche. I suspect, given the san serif letter, it is from the next cycle. Perhaps one of our readers has the post 1956 sequence to share. IP: Logged |
