Hello all, Here is an item you don't see every day (at least I don't!) It is a large meat dome in Old Sheffield Plate, stamped under the top by R&S Garrard, Panton St. London. Attached to either side are identical coats of arms, hallmarked for London, 1820-21 and bearing the maker's mark of the well regarded Edward Farrell. The handle bears the mark of Paul Storr(!), but I can not find the date letter, just the lion passant and the duty mark. At any rate, this does appear to be an important item. I was wondering if anyone with a good grasp of heraldry can help with the coat of arms. As I understand it, the coronet with five strawberry leaves is for a Duke, and the head-on view of the barred helm implies that the coat is from the royal family. Can anyone correct my interpretation, or help with any further identification? Thanks! Brent IP: Logged |

The coronet is a ducal coronet, as you have said; however the helmet is a knight's helm. The crest is associated with the Ashley / Astley names, but that is as close as I can safely get, using the information in Fairbairn's, which is the only source I have vailable at the moment - there are minor differences in the various descriptions that do not allow a firm assignment to any one individual. The two names are undoubtedly variant spellings from the families of related individuals. IP: Logged |

It looks like there is a small shield with a hand inside the upper centre part of the large shield. If so this may indicate a baronet. IP: Logged |
