Hello all I've another enigma to share - one of my spoons isn't exactly correct, so to say.... I've identified it as a 1834 Fiddleback teaspoon, made in Newcastle by TW (whom I suspect to be Thomas Wheatley as per his mark (second from top) on p505 of Jacksons (full edition). It is also equipped with correct Lion Passant (slightly rubbed), duty mark and date letter, in the correct order. What it is missing, however, is the Leopards Head crowned (it is meant to be there, apparently, as per p495 in the full Jackson's). Any reason why this would be so? There is a gap in the marks, between the Three Castles of Newcastle and the Maker's mark. Perhaps it was meant to be marked with the Leopard, but didn't make it. This has been puzzling me for a while, I must confess. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. Waylander IP: Logged |

Small items from early in the 19th Century were often incompletely marked. We will need a photograph of the marks and of the spoon itself to confirm that your identification is correct. See How to Post Photos at the top of this page. IP: Logged |

Alas I am not gifted with a digital camera with sufficient megapixels to be able to take such close up photographs as required - however I will be my best to make a drawing of them . Thanks Waylander IP: Logged |

Actually, the lowest resolution is all that is required, as higher resolution pictures may be too large and would have to be reduced to be posted. You can also photograph through a simple magnifying glass if your camera can not focus close enough to enlarge the marks sufficiently. However, a drawing is better than nothing. IP: Logged |
