Just wondering about the maker of a teaspoon my wife and I bought in a market in the UK probably 20 years ago ( I have recently started collecting minor silver spoons as an added collecting interest, hence this post.)(sorry can't yet post pictures to a website as my ISP doesn't offer storage!) Spoon has the following markings queens image in round B in shield (all vertically aligned) lion in shield (Horizontal)Leopard (vertical) then higher on the handle two conjoined punch marks with initial G A (hoisontal alignment) and a seven punch mark to the right of the initials and what looks like a freehand L tothe left of the GA (or maybe another 7 mark) these marks are all impressed on the upper portion of rear handle and on the front of the spoon is engraved a stylised fancy initial B. Any assistance with the maker etc would be appreciated. and rest assured I have no commercial interest other than as a personal collector. Thank you. Ken. IP: Logged |

GA in conjoined circles = George Adams who was the proprietor of the well known company Chawner & Co (note that this is falsely attributed in some reference books, notably Wyler's Book of Old Silver, to George Angell). The other marks may well be those of the worker who actually made the spoon. Phil IP: Logged |

I've a George Adams spoon as well, and it too has an odd shape abutting the top right "corner" of GA's maker's mark. I thought mine was just a stamping error, but it seems now that it may have been a deliberate policy. Can anyone else shed more light on this? Cheers Waylander01 IP: Logged |
