Can anyone tell me anything about an ANNE BICKERTON an undocumented London silversmith in the 1750 –1770 period ? She may have entered marks in the lost London smallworkers register of 1739-58 and was certainly working in the 1763 –1769 period when she was fined by the Goldsmiths Company for selling substandard buckles and gave her occupation as Goldsmith in 1766 as plaintiff in an Old Bailey trial. She may be related to Benjamin Bickerton , a silver bucklemaker working c1756 – c1800 and his presumed brother Henry, another silversmith. It is possible she may have been the junior partner in Poole (George) and Bickerton , Jewellers recorded by Heal in 1770 -1774 at 88, Bartholomew Close (which is less than half a mile from Benjamin’s premises at Jwein Street. She may have only been a retailer , but I have recently found a London assayed buckle of the 1760 –1770 period with an A.B makers mark, which is not in the London surviving London Registers. Any clues etc very welcome ! Clive IP: Logged |

I have had a very good response to my query which has resolved the question. A direct descentant of Benjamin Bickerton has kindly sent me a copy of the will and probate of Thomas Bickerton. Thomas was the brother of Benjamin as we all thought , but he died some time between February 1765 and October 1765 (when the Will was proven). Anne was named as his wife/widow and was almost certainly the mysterious Anne Bickerton fined for Substandard buckles. Goldsmiths Hall are going to trace the actual date and details of the case , but it looks as if we've got her. Her absence of mark in the Register could be several reasons- she may have been inadvertently entered in the largeworkers register of 1758 -1773.(which is missing) or , more likely, she did not bother to register a new punch . i have now had word from Goldsmiths Hall that Anne Bickerton appears in the Broken Plate Book 3 September 1765 with a parcel of work weighing 5lbs. 10ozs. 5dwts which was ii dwts below standard. Thus we know that she was sending silver goods to be assayed (of slightly substandard silver in this instance) and hence SHOULD have had a registered makers mark. The goods being buckles, and her initials being AB itis therefore likely that this unknown mark is hers. The guy who kindly provided the last link found my query on Silver Salon Forums while on a trawl for the name BICKERTON . And we have added a minute piece of knowledge to the history of English silvermaking. IP: Logged |
