[08-0203] Hi there, Can anyone enlighten me on the following maker from London: I can try to describe the mark as follows: On the left: 88 or it could be SS,
(The photo is not of highest quality but by zooming it could be better seen.) The item dates of 1897. I am particularly interested in the full and exact name of the maker, his working period and if he had any particular objects that he produced. Somebody mentioned to me Hutton but I don't know if it is correct and do not have further details. Thanks in advance. IP: Logged |

Hi Mark is for William Hutton & Sons Limited, large Sheffield manufacturers who worked in the 2nd 1/2 of the 19th and early 20th centuries. They were very, very prolific - a Google search shold help russle up some information. Cheers Waylander IP: Logged |

On a second study I am sure that it is not a crown but the letter W on top of the H. So it corresponds to what Waylander says. And then not 88 but SS for Sons and not L° but Ld for Ltd. Thanks Bilgi IP: Logged |

I am not sure why, but my first thought in seeing this flatware is that they had been tattooed. Maybe seeing an unexpected pattern on normally plain flatware or a design that completely engulfed the all available space caused this reaction. Interesting design. IP: Logged |
