If I'm reading these hallmarks correctly, this tea caddy is by Samuel Taylor, London 1768. Could that be right? I'd appreciate any comments. I'm not asking for purposes of resale, just to find out if this is accurate. Here are the hallmarks and a picture of the tea caddy. I hope this works.
Thanks for your help. IP: Logged |

It appears that you are correct. The date letter is a lower case Black Letter (Old English) "n" for 1768, shown upside down in your photograph. Samuel Taylor registered a maker's mark (Grimwade #2645) that looks like the one in your photograph in 1741, and a similar one in 1757. IP: Logged |

Absolutely! Samuel Taylor is the foremost maker of 'roccoco' (assymetrical flowers, scrolls, rocks etc.) decorated teacaddies - all the decoration on your caddy is absolutely original - They usually come in pairs, together with a matching covered sugar bowl (but this does not detract from your lovely piece) - often contained in a fine teacaddy box. Well Done! Ideally there should be a maker's mark and lion on the lid too?? (perhaps on the plain rim? where it fits into the caddy) The lid only needs these two because it is officially 'part' of the already fully-marked caddy. IP: Logged |

During the Rococo Revival of the Victorian period it was common practice to add such decoration to earlier plain pieces, but as Silver Lyon has indicated, this is not the case in this instance. Nice find -- and your photograph of the marks is excellent, too. From the title of your topic, "Lucky Find?", might there be a tale behind this aquisition that would be suitable for inclusion in the "Silver Stories" Forum? IP: Logged |

Thanks so much, and yipppee! I'm thrilled. There is a lion and makers mark on the plain rim of the lid, they are a bit worn, but still legible. Thanks for the added information about Samuel Taylor, I really appreciate it. A three part set would have been grand, but I'm still very happy to have one part of a set. I particularly like the bird and flower on the top. This was a lucky find for me, but I'm afraid the story isn't too interesting. I purchased it at an auction. The auctioneer said that he hadn't found any hallmarks on the piece, and I guess no one else in the crowd had looked for them--so it was a great bargain. I didn't know the age or maker when I purchased the tea caddy, but thanks to the silver forums, knew enough to look for hallmarks on the lid as well as the base during the auction preview. So, thanks again! I'll treasure the caddy. IP: Logged |

Actually, the story of your good fortune is just the sort of thing we are looking for - it provides positive reinforcement for the premise that the Forums should serve as a learning tool, which is an objective we strive for. It would have gone well in the Silver Stories Forum, but is fine here. So congratulations on your good fortune - you have put your new knowledge to good use! IP: Logged |
