Callie: There is a beaver mark shown in a post with some animal marks that has been difficult to pin down. Although it might date a bit early for your primary interests, I wonder if you might have an opinion on it? IP: Logged |

Sorry to be so late in answering...have been out of town. No, I'm sorry, I don't have any comment on the mark. IP: Logged |

After referring to the links mentioned earlier, to put matters straight The Trade Mark of John Sherwood & Sons of Litchfield Street, Birmingham, England is a beaver - it is their most prized mark and appears on all of their very considerable output which includes 'spoons and forks of various patterns'. A beaver with two peaks at the top of the shield shaped punch is a manufacturing mark for the large factory in Montreal of Robert Henderey and Hendery & Leslie - the mark used c.1870-1900.
Their beaver can be found with a 'Queens head' like an English duty mark, or a crowned head, with lion passants that are very similar to those used in London, crowns which look like Sheffield etc. but The beaver USUALLY has either two peaks (most common) or one very prominent central peak. HE may be found with literally dozens of 'maker's marks' as, like in the USA smaller concerns were only too happy to buy the (cheaper) produce from a central large manufacturer. Hope this helps!!
