I have a pair of serving spoons that are hallmarked for London 1785 with a maker's mark of CU. Any suggestions for the name of the maker? IP: Logged |

What you have is much more fun! This is a Chinese Export mark attributed usually to Cutshing of Old China Street, Canton. He was working the the period c.1825-1850. I imagine that he was in fact trying to copy the London hallmark for 1825 (the k is lower case) but forgot to make an uncrowned leopard. This is CU's BEST set of pseudo-hallmarks in terms of looking real. - I am sure that the clever moderator will be able to post a picture of the mark for all to see?? CU made a whole range of pieces from salt spoons thru' to entree dishes which are always of really good quality workmanship - even his spoons are really nice and well balanced. If you refer to Paul Lemieux's posting Unknown Marks 12-01-03 you will see another set of CU's (nothing like so well cut, and probably a little later) pseudo-hallmarks. Sorry-should have looked at the thread you attached first. The marks on my spoons are very different than those shown in Paul's thread. In particular, the CU mark is very different-on mine the letters are not conjoined and are typical capital letters contained in a rectangle. Also, the remaining hallmarks on the spoons shown in Paul's thread are "cruder" than mine. I will post a photo this evening, and you can see what you think. IP: Logged |

I have had the two spoons tucked away for quite a while and hadn't really looked at them. While the CU mark is very different than the mark that Paul's thread shows, the remaining hallmarks are similar to the Cutshin marks. I guess the mystery is solved, which is very exciting!! I will post a photo of the marks, so that you can see the difference. IP: Logged |
