I'm new to silver, so I would appreciate any help. I recently bought a set of dessert spoons hallmarked for Newcastle. The date stamp is "I" in a square with rounded corners and the makers initials are IR or LR. Can anyone tell me the year of manufacture and the makers name?

Thanks.

Because the date letters were repeated (with variations) in a 24 year cycle, and the degree of wear can influence how they look, we really need to see both the date letter and the other accompanying marks. In other words, without a pic, it's a big ask unfortunately.

...However we can say that the date is either 1799, 1823 or 1847. IR is the most likely interpretation of the maker's mark - for John Robertson. If so we can rule out 1847. Unfortunately there were 2 John Robertsons. The first was working in 1799 and the second would probably be right for 1823.

.... and in 1799 the leopards head was generally square while in 1823 it was generally oval -- and the duty stamp changed in 1821 with the accession of William IV ....

Thanks for your help. The makers mark is definitely IR and the duty mark is George III, so these spoons must have been made in 1799 by John Robertson.

Can you recommend any books or other sources I might get - I can see how one might get hooked on this stuff!

Check the next most recent posting before yours on this site. There's a good thread going on resource books for English silver 9best reference books).

Careful-this stuff's addictive!!
