I have recently found a 20cm Salver or Waiter by Ebenezer Coker from 1756. There is a heraldic crest on the surface, and script marks and numbers on the reverse, separate from the makers marks. I have had very little luck with identifying the crest, and have had even worse luck getting a digital photo of sufficent quality to post. Any suggestions on either topic? Thank you in advance for your help. Mark G. Newman IP: Logged |

You might try an old fashioned pencil rubbing, which might give you soomething you could photograph or trace to make a drawing. Failing that, there is a book, fairly inexpensive, which illustrates and assigne to families hundreds of crests. It is Fairbairn's Crests, and copies are plentiful on the used market. Try AddAll.com's used book listings. IP: Logged |

Another suggestion is to take a smoke. The process sounds more horrendous than it actually is incidentally ! Use a lighted candle held a few inches under underside of the salver so that the smoke from the candle blackens the crest. I said it was scary ! Apply transparent sellotape to the crest, you may need to do this in sections . Remove tape, which should give you a sootty image on the tape. Apply tape to a piece of white card. Clean salver and have a stiff drink ! Works on marks as well The more you do of these the better they get ! Choice of brand/type of sellopotape is important, some work better than others You can copy the crest then on a scanner and transmit easily. Sometimes best to take several smokes and scan, the combine with editing .Actually you may be able to scan the crest directly onto the scanner if the rim is fairly low . NO GUARANTEES ! Good luck - Coker was a great silver smith , apparently made castings by waterpowered centrifugal moulds in a circular array IP: Logged |
