I have looked at my eleven silver forks with ivory handles more carefully. There are FOUR marks (hallmarks): W.Y...then an anchor...then a lion passant...then a T. Can anyone decipher these marks for me? IP: Logged |

The anchor suggests that the piece was made in Birmingham. The capital "T" is a date letter for about 5 different years across two centuries. To determine which one it might be I need to know the shape of the punch in which in the letter is set and the style of the letter. TM IP: Logged |

Gayle, welcome to the Forum. Please be aware that you need not open duplicate threads on the same topic - you can post new comments as a reply to the original message in the same thread. Splitting a thread results in part of the discussion getting lost. Tmockait may well be correct in his identification, but please be advised, as reiterated in numerous posts, it is not the policy in the British Forum to attempt to identify marks without an accompanying illustration for the following reasons: In most cases, a photograph is necessary for positive identification of hallmarks, as many subtle variations exist; verbal descriptions are subject to interpretation, and may not contain necessary details. If a photograph is not possible, the next best thing is a detailed drawing of all the marks, whether or not the poster believes them all to be necessary. Not all marks are true hallmarks; pseudohallmarks can be confused with true hallmarks and cannot be reliably distinguished from verbal descriptions.
