Hi there, I have a teaspoon with the single mark "JS". I consulted Richard Turners book and the only entry for a JS mark on its own is for John Sellar of Tain. However I have looked at other Tain pieces online and the JS stamp is different. It is monogrammed but it looks more like a pattern than an initial. The second piece looks like a small condiment spoon stamped "GE" "GE". I thought this was for George Elder of Banff but again other pieces I have looked at have the stamp in a different style. Any ideas? IP: Logged |

Scotia, is it possible that the JS is ST if turned? It is hard to see on my sceen and just does not look right as JS... On the other hand... Oh well! [This message has been edited by agleopar (edited 02-02-2005).] IP: Logged |

Hi, It could be "sr" the other way around. The other distinguishing thing is that the box the mark is in has curved sides like - )sr( hmmm IP: Logged |

I have seen punches where an I (an old form for for J) was converted to the more modern J - this could be that. Another possibility is that the punch could have been cut from a longer punch, which might explain the irregular appearing ends which almost look like they carry partial letters. IP: Logged |

Hi, I have inspected the mark and it definitely not been overstamped. The curves also are not remnants of other letters. Hopefully these photos will come out a bit clearer - always seem to look different on the laptop compared to the P.C.

Much easieer to read. I suspece, because of the "knob" at the end of the curve of the first letter, and the position of the serif on the S, that the letters are JS. The form of both letters is at variance with common usage, but lower case letters would be more so. IP: Logged |

Hi again, I have emailed a few people about the JS mark and they are unsure also. I am awaiting a reply from the Tain museum, which houses some impressive pieces of provincial silver. Does anyone know any specialist provincial dealers/experts who may know? I believe the salt spoon is by George Elder although the letter style is different. IP: Logged |
