A while ago, we purchased a little mustard spoon, maker's mark SM. I am wondering if these are not pseudo marks as the spoon seems to have been made in London but the assay mark is missing? I am enclosing a photo of the marks and hope I have remembered how to post photos! Thanks for any help.

Your spoon looks like it dates from 1787. It was very common from around then until 1815 / 1820 or so for the assay office mark to be omitted - and not just for London. Normally it's fairly straightforward to identify the town, particularly if the maker is distinctive, but occasionally it can be very difficult. I'm pretty sure that this is London, though. Jackson lists "SM" in 1787 as being either Samuel Meriton II or Samuel Moulton. Phil IP: Logged |

Many thanks Phil for your knowledgeable response. I thought the marks may have been pseudo because of the missing assay office mark. IP: Logged |
