I am interested to know whether the maker's mark for GW&P stands for George West? The reason I ask is that I was recently able to purchase a wonderful George West swing handle sugar basket, dated 1796-97, while on vacation. When I returned home, I was looking through my Miller's Price Guide from 2002, having remembered that I had seen a similar Irish piece in the silver section. It turns out that the pieces are virtually identical-they both have the exact same chasing on the base and around the bowl and the same reeding on the handle. The Miller guide identified the maker's mark as GW&P and dated the piece as 1799-1800. IP: Logged |

Hi Doc, silly question, but are you sure it's "GW&P" and not "W&P". My Jackson's "Pocket Edition" has a "W&P" which is for "Weir & Rogers". There is still a Weir's Shop in Dublin, Ireland on Granton Street. I often walk past. Tom IP: Logged |

The matching bowl is shown in a Miller's price guide, which only has a general picture and doesn't show the marks, but the description says the maker is GW&P. IP: Logged |

A quick check of "Irish Georgian Silver" by Bennett, and also "Collecting Irish Silver" showed George West using only "GW" stamps, one in cameo, the other incised. There was no "GW&P" listed. There is no "W&P" listed, but there is "W&R", which is for Weir & Rogers, but is of Victorian date. IP: Logged |
